I look around Eclipse and think about whether I want to tell the rookie what’s on my mind. I explained to him the whole thing about seeing Amelia today because he was going off about how great it is to be in a relationship and I just blurted it out. I also told him she’s pregnant, but I’m a bit embarrassed to tell him I proposed to her. “I asked her to marry me yesterday,” I say it anyway. May as well give him the entire story.

“You did what?” Lincoln asks. I take a sip of my beer and wait for the lecture I expect will come. He seems like the kind of guy who walks a straight line and will have something to say about the predicament I’m in.

“She’s pregnant,” I tell him.

I’m surprised he looked more shocked at me asking her to marry me than me telling him she’s pregnant. “And that means you had to ask her to marry you?” he asks.

I nod. “She doesn’t want to be a single mom, so yeah,” I tell him.

“I’m sure that statement wasn’t an invitation for a proposal,” he says with a chuckle. “From what you’ve just told me about her, I’m sure that didn’t go over well.”

At this point, I’ve told my dad, Kaitlyn, my brother, that random police officer, and now Lincoln. I see him enough times a week that getting some advice from him wouldn’t be so bad.

Lincoln bailed me out of jail. He fought the hockey guys for me too. He’s not a bad guy. He’s a great quarterback. I can say that now that we’ve played a few games. He’s been nothing but trustworthy since he got here and seems knowledgeable enough that I can actually talk to him about this without him making fun of me and the whole situation.

“She turned me down,” I tell him.

He laughs and I toss back the rest of my beer then signal the bartender to get me another one. “I mean, what did you expect? She’d tell you she’s pregnant, you’d offer to marry her, she’d say yes, and then you guys would live happily ever after?” When he says it like that, it does sound too easy to be real.

“I don’t know what I’m supposed to do. She’s thinking about giving it up for adoption or having an abortion. I want her to keep it. I don’t know what to do,” I tell him honestly. The first thing I did in handling this whole thing was terrible. I want to make it all right.

Lincoln takes a sip of his Coke and I shake my head at him. Now that I think about it, I don’t think I’ve ever seen him have a sip of alcohol. Maybe it’s a no alcohol during the season kind of thing? “Just be there for her. Whatever she decides. Remember that this will affect her more than it will you,” he says, interrupting my thoughts.

I nod. I hadn’t thought about it that way.
